Your Goals Determine Your Actions
Success begins with vision and vision assumes empirical form as goals.
Our ways of communicating have changed dramatically in over thirty years, but the basic principles of success remain the same. Back then we spoke about "crystallized goals," but with the influence of modern psychology we now talk about "chunking down our day-to-day goals;" however, we are still talking about the same principle -- breaking down goals into smaller and smaller pieces until they become easy to accomplish quickly.
I interviewed a psychologist once, who explained how childhood trauma could affect someones ability to set goals and take action. He gave several, perhaps extreme, case studies that showed a persons way of perceiving their world after being affected by some traumatic experience. As a psychologist, his job was to help those trauma patients perceive their ability to interact with the world in a small series of tiny tasks that were achievable for them.
A renewing of the mind was also necessary, and for that, he had to teach his patients to associate their small efforts with some form of reward to begin the dissociation of their entire person with trauma.
All of us have had experiences that have shaped the way we perceive ourselves in relationship with the work we have to do. We see young, arrogant people around us that seem to rise quickly in an organization, while delightfully humble people seem to be stepped over by everyone.
The world rewards productivity, not personalities. It rewards results, not effort. That is why it is important that we begin to develop ways to make ourselves more productive. This is true at home as much as it is at work. In fact, if your house and yard are in a mess, chances are your entire life is in a mess. If a television program takes priority over serving the family supper, then there is a good chance you never eat any meals together and the social fiver that holds your family together is decaying.
Productivity Starts With Goals
Order in your life can only be achieved by keeping every aspect of your life in continuous motion. The universe has order and is always in motion. A planet in our solar system cannot decide to stop moving one day. If it did, maybe the entire solar system would collapse.
If you ignore any major areas of your life, your entire solar system may collapse. Think about how a divorce affects our entire life; it affects our children, our work, our income, our hobbies, where we live, the way our friends treat us, and even our ability to pray.
Productivity starts with goals, but goals must be comprehensive and encompass every aspect of our lives, even the time we spend helping our children with their homework.
Goals From General To Specific
To be comprehensive, goals must begin with a general overview of the major planets in your solar system, that is, with the major areas of your life: Spirituality, Family, Work, Health, Finances, Hobbies, Maintenance, etc.
Once you have selected the areas that need attention, then you can start to create specific goals for those areas. Keep it simple. Dont overwhelm yourself before you even get started. The main idea here is to realize that goals are not for work only. You were not created for work, but work was created for you to help you prosper in your life, as a family man or woman.
Dont forget to create goals that are achievable and that encourage you. Crystallize the goals, chunk them down, keep them simple and you will begin to form a new image of yourself as a very productive and valuable individual.
