The Best Use of Your Time

The Best Use of Your Time

Sometimes, twenty four hours a day seem to pass a quickly as turning the pages on a book. At other times, time seems to stop and we can hardly wait to leave wherever we are and go home.

Our perception of time can change dramatically from one day to another. Einstein discovered that even time is relative, but we are more interested in what happens in the mind and on how we can subdue time.

It seems that time and money are the most measurable tests of character. It is hard to measure our patience or our diligence or our self-control, but it is much easier to measure how we use our time and our money. Measuring time and money is also a way to measure our own virtues or lack of them. As Delmore Schwartz once said, “Time is the fire in which we burn.”

Investing Your Time Wisely

It is a shameful truth that most time management training concentrates on managing your time at work. Some of them may mention family life, but your life is more than just work and family.

If you think in terms of planning your time, you are already missing the point. It is not time you are trying to control it is your own life.

Most of us have seen people on the side of the road with a little container of gasoline trying to correct their omission. My next door neighbor when I was in college must have gotten tire of getting a phone call to bring me the gasoline can from my back yard to such and such an address. I was notorious for failing to plan.

You have to decide what the most important areas in your life are and then decide what amount of time you need to dedicate to each area to keep everything moving smoothly: Your spirituality, your wife, your children, your work, your rest, your health, your talents, your finances, your home, your vehicle.

Looking at Time

Some of the clichés we hear tend to twist our perception of time, where it even seems like time is in control of our lives rather than we.
“Time is money;” an obviously materialistic point of view. I remember the time-and-motion studies that were often done at the McDonalds where I used to go after school. The workers under study acted like man-made human machines.

“Time heals;” pain is part of life, it is part of being refined in the fire; saying to someone that time heals may be like saying that they shouldn’t own up to their pain because it will eventually go away.

“Time flies;” the old Latin expression, tempus fugit, actually means “time flees,” but the concept is the same, it implies that time is being wasted. When people say, “Time flies while you are having fun,” it also implies that we cannot even control our time of rest.

Choosing How to Use Your Time

Plan your life to control your time. Often rest is the best use of your time. Watching a TV show together with your family can create lasting memories.

Some areas of your life don’t require as much time as others, but they need to be scheduled. Cutting the lawn may not seem as important as going to the gym, but you may be embarrassed next time someone drops by for a visit.

Plan time for your finances, for rearranging your garage, for taking your cars to have the oil changed, but never let the most important areas of your life go without continual attention: you spirituality, your family, your work, and your health.
