When you walk through the downtown area of any major city, you typically see a variety of businesses, religious institutions, service organizations, government agencies, pubs, and night clubs that are built closely together but that attract very different types of visitors. It is the same with websites; they are created for different purposes, with different scopes, and to serve specific people.
Most people drive downtown for the exclusive purpose of visiting just one place. They don't just wonder around aimlessly until they find themselves downtown; they are driven there for a reason, even if that reason is to pay their utility bill. Understanding the scope of your website will be the key to deciding the traffic generation strategy that you need to use to drive traffic to your site.
"Know your audience." This is the key to deciding the traffic generation strategy you will use. A Soup Kitchen or Homeless Shelter using social media to drive traffic to their services may end up drinking their own soup. When you walk through a large city like Manhattan you are more likely to be handed a flyer or discount coupon to visit a strip club than be handed a church bulletin; and yet, people pack the churches every Sunday also.
Develop your own traffic generating strategy by matching the scope of your business to the tactics that would be appropriate for your audience. You don't have to use all of them to be successful. In fact, most marketers that I know concentrate their efforts on just a few methods. You will most likely end up specializing in one particular way of generating traffic, even if you complement it occasionally with other methods, unless you have employees assigned to different traffic generating activities or unless you outsource the work.
Regardless of what method you choose to drive traffic, know for a fact that traffic will not appear automatically, you must drive it there. The success of your website is up to you.
I see many businesses struggling to survive after spending half a fortune on their websites.
