Mindset creates Set Minds
At the local library, there are now hundreds of audiovisual materials. They were not available just a few years back. When they first became available, you had to sit at a special booth at the library to watch or listen to the material. Now you can get audio books to listen to in your car while you drive to work.
It is amazing how many successful people do that habitually. It is interesting to me when I read about another successful person who has read hundreds of biographies. I recently learned of someone who was told by his librarian that according to their records, he had checked out more than 12,000 items in the last 30 years. That works out to about an item a day and he is not planning to stop anytime soon.
Mindset can be learned by association. The old adage that you are known by the company you keep has also been stated by some as your income can be measured by the average income of the five people closest to you. What is certain is that your thoughts determine who you are.
Mindsets as Programs
More than thirty years ago, I learned something from Norman Vincent Peale that revolutionized the way I though. He said that peoples minds are pre-programmed to process information in specific ways. Some process the information positively and some negatively.
Empirical observation may help us discover that mindsets are as individual as fingerprints. Our thoughts determine who we are, but not even twins can think the same thoughts all the time.
What we want is for our internal programming to process information in a way that is edifying, not in a way that is destructive and self defeating.
The old computer we had at the college I attended had to be fed perforated cards. We would take the stacks of cards, and we were asked to come back at night to pick up the printouts with the results of our program. Once the cards were out, the computer no longer remembered the program. The same is not true for us. We have built-in memory much greater than any computer. We remember and are formed by what we learn.
Setting Your Mind
Success starts with mindset, but it is brought about by a set mind, that is, by a mind that is determined to create what it envisions.
Having a vision is not enough. You have to have the mindset to support you in the process of achieving that vision. You have to be able to think of yourself as someone similar to all the success stories that you have read. You have to discover your true potential.
Once your mind is renewed, once you discover that you are not just another consumer but a creator and producer, then it is time to find your vision and set your mind on that vision.
The Will Follows the Intellect
Mystical meditation is based on the principle that the will follows the intellect. Mystics dont meditate just for the sake of meditating; they do it to shape their wills, to train themselves to desire what their spirits should desire.
Renewing the mind is not an impossible task. After all, people often repeat the simple truth, You are what you eat.
