As we discussed in the section on Search Engine Optimization, most prospects find your site when they search for something that interests them at the time; that is the 'something' they type into the search engine, their keywords. The most relevant your site is to the keywords they type, the more likely the search engine is to find your site.

Most people online seem to think that since there is always someone looking for whatever it is they sell, why then should they bother researching keywords? Simply because of competition.

You are not the only business person offering your product or service online and, unless you research what people are looking for exactly, you may have very little chance of being found by a search engine, no matter how good your site may be or how much better your product is.

For the term "product marketing mix" there were a total of 30 searches last month in one of the major search engines, but there are a total of 26 million sites that have information on that topic. What would be the chances for any one of those companies of been found? About one in a million, literally! On the other hand, for the term "goal setting forms" there were 1,765 searches, but there were only 71 sites offering information on that topic. If you were one of those sites, you would have a very good chance of been found. The odds would be on your side 25 to 1.
