I often hear stories of people that have had great success after only a few weeks or months online. To be honest, they are the exception. Most businesses have to go through a growing process that involves a lot of planning and promotion.
If you are starting a small online business, the first thing that you do is to create a website or to hire someone to create one for you. The problem is that most small businesses stop there and wait for the traffic to start pouring in. A few months later they decide the internet doesnt really work and at the end of a year they let their domain name expire and they quit.
Last year, I created a website for a client. I even had to travel abroad to gather information. The project was not a small investment in either time or money.
One of the first things I did was to use my SpyFu account to see how much money the direct competitors were spending in advertising every day. I was not surprised that their AdWords budget alone was about $200 per day. After all, some of the major players even advertise on national television and each of those ads costs thousands of dollars each time the ads appear. I immediately recommended balancing the advertising budget with web 2.0 properties that could produce free traffic for the website at no cost but the client was not interested.
When You Depend On Advertising Traffic Can Stop Overnight
When the internet started and online businesses developed new forms of advertising, like contextual ads, blinking banners, pop ups, etc. advertising was cheap, but as more and more people came online and the demand for advertising increased, the cost has also increased dramatically. In fact, until you know what you are doing you could lose a lot of money while you are learning to advertise profitably.
Even then, if one month you have an emergency and have to tap into your advertising budget to take care of other needs, your traffic stops immediately. Online advertising is not like an ad in a magazine that can bring customers to your website a month after the magazine was published. When you stop and online ad it is never seen again, no matter how much you search for it.
Web 2.0 Can Continue to Bring Traffic Indefinitely
Web 2.0 properties are websites where you can put your own content and a link or many links to your website. Web 2.0 properties are usually free, though you could also consider some of the ones that may have reasonable yearly fees.
My favorite web 2.0 property is YouTube. You can upload your own video to YouTube and you can have a link to your website in the description area of the video. You could also have some blatant advertising within the video itself, which not all of the video sharing sites will allow. Who knows, perhaps YouTube will also start restricting marketing videos one day, so take advantage of it now.
There are web 2.0 sites, like Facebook and Twitter where you can also interact with other members in a more direct way. What is incredible in social media is that people may also be already looking for you or at least for people with your same interests or products.
The social and interactive nature of web 2.0 properties have such a great advantage over static sites that they will always have traffic that you can find and bring to your website through whatever interesting content you can create to attract the traffic to you.
