Freelancing The First Step to a Second Income and to Total Freedom
Looking back, it seems as if only a few months after I got a job, I was already looking for additional income. I started at the very bottom and was already married and I wanted to provide a stable homelife for my family.
I had sold artwork as a student, so it wasnt very hard to find a few odd jobs here and then, but it was never anything steady.
I ascended very quickly in the organization, but that didnt satisfy me. I was concern about the talents I was burrying to concentrate on my job. I decided to dedicate nine weeks of my life to just discerning what I needed to do.
I was traveling throughout the United States for those nine weeks, conducting training seminars for factory workers. I chose to drive, rather than fly, in order to have a bit more time for myself to ask, to seek, and to knock in my search for discernment.
As the nine weeks progressed, I had a great revelation. The first thing that I discovered was that if I wanted to lose or waste a talent, I had to isolated from other talents and leave it alone and forgotten. Next, I discovered that I didnt have the ability to invest my talents on my own, and that because of that, I needed a job with a company or a person that could invest my talents and pay me a salary. And last, I understood beyond a shadow of a doubt that what I needed to do was to train myself to come into a place where I could invest my talents on my own and that meant all my talents, not just the one or two I was using at the time in my job.
Learn to Invest Your Talents By Freelancing
For years, I struggled. After ascending so quickly on my first job, the company lost the main government contracts and I found myself without a job from one day to the next.
Someone that knew me, asked me to freelance for his company and I did. I started commuting monthly to a different state and on my very first trip I made the decision not to apply for unemployment, but to consider myself self-employed from that point on.
I wasnt making much money, but I continued to work on my own for the next eight years. That is when my freelancing took me out of the contry for a two year project, but when I came back all my contacts were gone and I didnt find enough freelance work to keep our family fed.
I went back to a nine-to-five job, but returned to freelancing as soon as I had a chance.
Freelancing can be one of the best ways to learn to invest your talents on your own. You still have the security of your job and you can complement your income while you grow in your ability to invest those talents.
The Internet Facilitates Freelancing
Internet marketing was still in its infancy while I was working overseas, and it took me a while to notice the importance that it would have in my future. However, as soon as I discovered its potential, I immediately set out to acquire the knowledge I needed to be able to invest my talents on my own.
Now that the internet is more mature, there are freelancing websites that facilitate the process. You dont have to go through all the trouble of creating a website, optimizing the content, and driving traffic to your freelance offers. All you have to do now is join a freelance network and bid on projects that are listed by the hundreds of visitors per day those sites already have.
You could even start freelancing at a very small scale, by joining Fiverr and offering your services.
As you gain confidence, you will begin to invest your other talents as well, and soon you will be hiring freelancers yourself and see their talents being added to yours.
