Free Mailing Lists: A couple of years ago, a well-known internet marketer tried to get a new account with several auto-responder services. He wanted to import one of his mailing lists and use the service. None of the major auto-responders would accept the list because he would not divulge its origin.Emailing people who have not opted into your list is considered spamming, though not strictly by the letter of the law, which only requires a way to opt-out. I get spam mail every day and the people that send spam are getting more and more sophisticated. They can even come to my server, capture my email address, and send me an email as if it were coming from me. Obviously, people with free mailing lists sending spam are making sales and that's all the justification they need. They will keep on spamming forever as long as people keep buying male enhancement products or calling their 1-900 numbers... unless technology stops them. Besides the aggravation of spam, there is also the threat of technological terrorism and the spreading of computer viruses.
I used to buy mailing lists for direct offline mailings, I also developed my own free mailing lists by going to the library to find addresses in magazines. It was not much different than spam, except for the fellow that use the junk mail he received to fuel his fireplace. We knew buying mailing lists worked if you could make a profit on the one to three percent reply rate. But direct mail is not as effective today as it was thirty years ago, and buying a list of emails, or obtaining free mailing lists can get you in trouble.
Mike Filsaime, a well-known internet marketer, tells of his experience buying mailing lists. As one of his first marketing strategies, Mike bought the biggest list he could afford. He happily sat down at his computer one evening and proceeded to broadcast a sales letter to hundreds of thousands of people. He called his internet service provider to check on the problem and found out that his account had been suspended due to spam complaints. When you are doing any transaction online, such as registering an electronic product, you often get asked if it is OK for you to receive offers for related services. If you click OK, you may be giving permission for that company to develop a free or paid mailing list to give to their associates. That is OK to do, except for the fact that many people will not recognize the other business or associate and may report the email as spam.
If you are the associate using the free mailing lists, make sure to include a small disclaimer at the bottom of each email saying that they are receiving communications because they opted in at such and such a place. You will most likely still be accused of spamming, but at least you have some protection to keep your auto-responder and internet accounts from been suspended.

I know I aggravated a lot of people knocking on their door while they were eating supper, but some also bought the books, and a couple of them even invited me to supper. Whatever risks you decide to take should be part of your business plan.
