Whether you read a novel or a non-fiction book, you can discover a the writing style of the person. I had a friend who always had to read anything that a certain news reporter wrote, not because of the new, but because of the funny style that the reporter had to report the news. Everything was factual, but he added a heavy mixture of his own winning personality that made the news more interesting.
Paul Harvey, Howard Cossell, Walter Cronkite and many others, have drawn an audience to themselves, more than just to the stories they told.
Developing a Continuous Style In Your Emails
After my siblings and I parted ways a few decades ago to start our families in scattered places, we communicated mostly by telephone and only occassionally. During the last decade, with our parents ailing health, we got closer again and started communicating more often. However, Im still shocked when my older sister sends me a text message using all the abbreviations that one of our children may use. Of course, she is more used to sending text messages to her son than I am to mine.
When I receive such messages, it still seems like a different person wrote them.
As internet marketers, we must develop continuity in the style that we use. If we start copying suggested emails for a particular promotion without adapting them to our own voice, or readers will know it, or they will at least feel something strange about the email.
Using a Professional or a Personal Style
Wheter you use a professional or a personal style depends on your niche, on your message, and on your personality.
If you are writing to scientists, you would not use the same style as if you were writing to comic book artists, even though both groups are serious professionals... more or less.
By the same token, the nature of your message will determine the style that you use for that particular message. Even if you typically use a professional voice, you may feel a need to share a personal event, such as the birth of a child, the death of your dog, or a personal vacation, I have encountered all of those types of messages.
But the most important factor in developing your style is you own personality. You must be yourself regardless of the message or the niche, just like the reporter my friend found so fascinating.
Useful Writing Formats
Besides developing your own voice in writing, you could also find that a particular structure of format of writing is effective for presenting you message.
The example that comes to mind right now is that of priests and ministers that have to present messages on a weekly or even daily basis. Week after week you begin to discover the underlying structure of their message.
Some evangelists may make their presentation almost as a lawyer would; arguing his case to a logical end. Other ministers have more of a storytelling style. Others are more poetic. Others are more historically oriented. And yet others are more aware of the current news and intermix their message with whatever is going on in the world.
I remember one time hearing a sermon that was based on an article from Progressive Farmer. It shocked me at the time, but the more I got to know the priest, the more I discovered a deep spirituality that was decades ahead of most other ministers I knew.
As we write, we begin to discover these little structures, techniques, or formats that we are most inclined to use to convey our message. Once they appear, we are more comfortable in using them and our writing seems easier.
