Designing Website Headers
Designing website headers can be a challange. It is not as simple as pasting a long photograph on to pf your website. It involves planning and a bit of problem solving.
The first challange is to determine the purpose of the header. Is it mainly a graphic element to enhance the page? Is it just a text element to add SEO value to the page? Does the website header need to be a single element, or would it be better if it were a combination of elements, such as graphics, text, and even a search box? Should your header also include your main site navigation, or should the navigation be a separate element altogether?
All of those decisions need to be made before you start to design your header.
A Website Header Is Not a Logo
A webiste header is not the same as a logo; however, a logo could be used as a header or as one of the elements in a website header.
If you already have a logo for your business, you should add it to your businesss website. However, if you are creating websites in various niches, then adding logos to all of them may be impractical.
On the other hand, if you only have a handful of niche websites that you are working on with the purpose of turning them into authority sites, then it may make sense to hve logos created for each one of the websites.
I go to Fiverr.com to outsource logos. I get several freelancers to work on logo designs and then I choose from among all the ones that are submitted. I may use the best logo as it is, or I may tweak it bit to create a final version. I keep the others as reference for future designs.
Website Headers and Search Engine Optimization (SEO)
Even the most beautiful website header or logo doesnt have the same SEO value as an H1 heading tag. Here are a few ways that you could add SEO value to your website header. You can choose the ones that seem appropriate for your website:
- Use the ALT tag for your header image or logo, making sure you use keyword-rich alternate text for your image.
- Turn your website header or logo into a graphic link pointing to the main page of your website. Internal links add SEO value to your overall website.
- Add an H1 heading tag to your website header.
- Turn your H1 heading tag into a link, just as you did with the header image or logo.
- Add your main navigation to your website header. Keep your navigation simple by creating sections and subsections in your website. Search engines seem to like structure and are capable of crawling even the most complex websites, provided that there are not broken links or orphan pages.
Website Headers May Compete With Your Content
Computer screens display a lot less pixels vertically than they do horizontally and it is very seldom that an entire page can be displayed fully on the screen. You usually have to scroll down to th view all the content.
Newspapers developed the expression, Above the fold. The idea is to give the most impact to the portion of the front page that is most visible, which is top half of the newspaper when it is folded.
Based on the same newpaper principle, you will see why it would be important to give the greatest impact to the area of your website that a visitor sees first.
Design your website header in such a way that it can help to the impact of the page and facilitate navigation, without intruding or competing with your content.
