Business Opportunities and Building Relationships
I was recently listening to a Rabbi talk about the principles of financial prosperity that have made the Jewish people disproportionally prosperous over other people. As an example, he stated that Jews are only 2 percent of the population in the United States. Based on that statistic, the Forbes 400, which lists the 400 richest people in the United States, should only have about eight or nine Jews in the list; however, the list usually has between 80 and 100 Jews.
Twenty years ago, I was listening to another Rabbi talk about how one of the main differences between the Christian faith and the Jewish faith was that Christians believed in a personal relationship with God, while Jewish people considered themselves a people in relationship with God. That was mind boggling and convicting to me, because we tend to value more our individualism than our relationships.
The number of divorces in our society is an indication of the lost in the value of relationships in our lives. The internet facilitates social communications, but it is not a replacement for true relationships. Eastern countries are suffering from an epidemic of children addicted to electronic games and have begun treating them as true addicts. Our young children seem incapable of obeying us when we call them to the dinner table. I heard one oriental child said that he doesnt know what he would do if he were forced to leave in the middle of an electronic game.
Relationships Require Commitment
We know that many marriages have resulted from online communications, so it is possible to develop committed relationships even online, but there is no substitute for a face to face relationship.
One of the principles that both Rabbis I mentioned put forward as a key to the success of the Jewish people was their commitment to relationships. As a persecuted society, they have developed an even stronger bond than they would otherwise have.
As the first Rabbi put it, if you are obsessed with helping people, then the obvious result is that you will be handsomely compensated for it, much more so than if all your focus was on serving your individual success.
Increase Your Relationships
Increase your relationships with an attitude of service if you want to increase your opportunities.
Big organizations have separate Sales Departments and Marketing Departments. Marketing departments in these organizations are not directly concern with sales; they are always striving to have a presence in the various social and business events in any City. They do it with the purpose of building relationships. If big businesses can afford to have a separate marketing department that sponsors sports, fairs, dances, and Best-of awards; most of us have to be our own marketing department.
For small entrepreneurs like us, marketing and sales seem to be the same thing, but they are not. We must learn to separate them. We call our industry Internet Marketing, but we are mostly interested in Internet Sales. We need to develop a bit of a Jewish mentality in our approach to marketing.
Increasing your internet marketing reach means increasing your potential relationships. Those relationships can be with customers, prospects, joint venture partners, or with service providers. If we focus on being of service, then we would have set ourselves up for financial prosperity.
Marketing wisdom tells us to find a need and then fill it, Jewish wisdom tells us to try to be of service to our relationships and you will be handsomely rewarded with business opportunities and financial prosperity.
