Being an Affiliate vs. Recruiting Affiliates

Being an Affiliate vs. Recruiting Affiliates

Affiliate marketing is a great way to start an online business. You don’t have to create products to sell, nor do you have to carry inventory, all you have to do is refer people to the vendor’s website and you get a commission from what they buy. It sounds simple enough, and yet, most affiliate marketers fail.

If you owned an offline store, you could either sell your own products, as in a bakery, or you could sell products produced by other people, as in a grocery store. There is a good chance that the grocery store owner is better rewarded than the bakery owner.

But what if the bakery owner would sell franchises? Then the competition would be fiercer and only the accountants may be able to tell us who the winner is.

Rewards of Being an Affiliate

Being an affiliate can be very liberating. You don’t have to concentrate on one niche; you could have websites in various niches and you could select those niches based on your own interests, or based on products that you know sell well. Your focus here is on marketing, not niches.

You can also chose from an entire range of prices. You can promote inexpensive electronic products, or you can promote costly physical products.

That is another advantage, that since you don’t have a physical store and you don’t have to carry inventory, you can actually promote anything, whether physical or electronic.

The greatest advantage is that you can promote as many products as you want to promote. You could promote every single vendor in the Commission Junction network or you could promote every vendor on Clickbank. You alone decide what size you want your virtual stores to have, that is, how many products you promote.

Rewards of Recruiting Affiliates

As in the case of the baker, you are limited by what you can sell at your store unless you can get other people to sell for you, as a franchisee would.

Recruiting affiliates is not like hiring employees. Affiliates are their own bosses and carry all the cost to do business. Employees cost you money and are dependent on your time and ability to guide them. Of course, when and affiliate sells your products, he makes a handsome profit, but that is profit you could not have made on your own, even with additional employees. If you cover your cost and still have enough profit left, then recruiting affiliates may be the best way to grow your business.

Recruiting affiliates presupposes that you are a product creator, or at least a product distributor. The great advantage is that you are hiring a sales team, but you only have to pay them if they actually sell and get results.

To Be or not To Be an Affiliate

There is no better leader than the one who knows through firsthand experience what obstacles his subjects have to overcome to succeed. Being and affiliate first, will prepare you to help your affiliates profit from your program.

Most affiliate marketers fail because they never get to see the whole picture, regardless of how many thousands of dollars they spend on training. They never do anything.

Doing the marketing is the door to unveiling the whole picture. Don’t expect to create an electronic product and just sit back and relax while letting your affiliates do the work. You have to know what tools your affiliates need and what hurdles they have to go through to get you traffic in order for you to help them succeed.
