Affiliate Marketing Presell

Affiliate Marketing Presell

The main difference between an offline retail store and an online affiliate website or store, other than the technology, is that the offline retail stores collect money from the customers, while affiliate websites do not. The payment process for an affiliate product is usually done at the product creator’s or product distributor’s website.

There are hybrid online stores, like Amazon, that sell other people’s products, but the product creators or distributors actually pay them to be listed and Amazon processes all the transactions.

But the typical setup for an affiliate marketer is to refer customers to the product creator’s sales pages. Seeing it in that way, we could say that we as affiliate marketers are paid to send traffic to other websites with which we are affiliated. As with any source of traffic, we are interested in increasing the possibility of conversions with our referrals. The way we do that is by making sure that we pre-sell the customer on the product before they visit the actual sales page to which we will send them.

Ways to Presell

Preselling can be as simple as getting a product datafeed from an affiliate network and creating webpages that parallels the vendor’s store. Datafeeds contain an image of each product, a title and description, and the price. Some datafeeds also contain additional information, such as special offers, SKUs, and product categories. When someone clicks on the link to one of the products, they are taken to the vendor’s store, where the more detailed product page is displayed. Even though you cannot copy a vendor’s web design, you should try to make your design in such a way that the visual transition between your affiliate website and the vendor’s website is a smooth one.

Another way of preselling is simply to write about the products you use and with which you are familiar, giving your honest opinion about them. The more honest your opinion, the more believable your recommendation can be. This is what we think of when we think of “pre-selling,” that is, creating a product recommendation based on your own experience with the product or the vendor or other users.

Similarly, you could write about several products, comparing and contrasting them in a review format. Though making a recommendation of one product can be a review, we think of “review sites” as sites that compare products and rate them. By doing so, they implicitly recommend one product over another, either based on performance or on price level.

Routing Traffic Without Presell

You often see ads about getting rich online without your own product, without a website, without Google, without Social Media, without a mama, without a dog, and with barely enough brains to fill out their order form.

If someone claims that you can make money online even if you are a test-tube baby completely isolated from the world, they are going to “blind sell” you a product that will most likely be Pay Per View (when you are sold an idea and are not told what the product is, you are being sold “blindly.”)

There is nothing wrong with Pay Per View, though it has been misused in the past. It is a very inexpensive way to send traffic to a website and it is typically used to send traffic directly to CPA offers or affiliate offers. The reason you don’t need a website is that, unlike Google AdWords or Article Marketing, Pay-Per-View Networks allow you to send traffic directly to the vendor’s sales page using your affiliate link.

The problem with Pay Per View is that the traffic to the website is delivered through pop-ups or pop-unders, and the conversions are very poor, which you could have guessed since there is absolutely no presell and the technology is distracting.

To Presell Or Not To Presell

Ultimately, you will be the one to decide. They both take a lot of work, but you can be successful either way. It is all about traffic and conversions. If you can create a review site that you can keep active and up-to-date, you will probably have enough traffic to make affiliate sales. Remember that the better job you do preselling, the better the chance you will have to convert your referrals into buyers.

If you opt for Pay Per View, be prepared, just as with AdWords, to lose a bit of money before you discover successful campaigns.
