Affiliate Marketing Lessons From Two Ice Cream Parlors
If you are an affiliate marketer, forget for a minute that you are using the virtual world of the internet to market other peoples products and imagine a real world store.
How could you succeed nowadays by selling two or three products such ice cream, cake, and coffee? Would it be safer if you could add thirty flavors of ice cream, ten of cake, and five of coffee? Could it be even safer if you added cold sandwiches and fruit juices?
Think of affiliate marketing just as you would think about a real world, brick and mortar, store. If all you sold was ice cream, and only one flavor, you would have a clientele, but not as significant as the clientele that you would have if you diversified.
My Two Favorite Ice Cream Stores
When I was a child, there was a family in my hometown that sold ice cream. The ice cream was homemade and it was the most delicious thing you ever put in your mouth. It made my childhood so much the more delicious.
On the other side of town, on the main strip, there was another ice cream place where they sold a variety ice cream that came in barrels and bars. The store would make milk shakes, banana splits, and ice cream cones, but I just like to buy the bars on my way to the movies.
Every time I came back to town, my mind would immediately think first about the homemade ice cream. Unfortunately, the store has been gone for decades. It still brings back fond memories when I walk by the house where the ice cream was made and sold.
Almost fifty years later, the other store, the one that sold the non-descript ice cream is still open. Just a couple of days ago, I asked someone where I could buy some specialty type of salty cakes that I have never seen except here in my hometown. My neighbor told me that old ice cream store sells the cakes.
I wasnt even surprised the store still existed, but it got me to thinking about the fifty years of adaptation that the store has gone through. It has even gone through a civil war and there was a time when they didnt even have ice cream to sell. But it has survived. It has adapted to changes. And it has diversified. They were never dependent on ice cream alone. They also sold sweetmeats and breads and anything else they needed to buy and resell in order to survive.
From the Real World to Affiliate Marketing
If you want to bring your business online, you have to realize that it is harder to make your virtual existence known, than it is to make your real world existence known.
The people that sold the homemade ice cream sold it from their home, which actually was on one of the main streets, but the other store was in the middle of town, where there is more traffic and visibility.
For your store to be found in the virtual world, you should have enough content in your website to increase the possibility of being found through free search engines, or you should have enough of an advertising budget to bring traffic to your site.
As an affiliate marketer, you are concentrating on selling other peoples products, not your own; therefore, it makes sense to diversify as much as possible while maintaining the theme of your niche.
Finally, the owners of the ice cream store could sell sweets and breads, but they would not have sold beauty supplies or auto parts. For that, they would have open separate store with separate themes. You could do that too, opening up separate websites that represent different vendors.
