Affiliate Marketing Lessons From a Tree Farm
Years ago, I had a few acres of land that had belong to my wifes family. I bought it at the insistence of her family. There was a big country house on the land, which I fixed and rented out, but I wasnt doing much with the land itself, except picking up a few pecans each winter.
There was a paper mill nearby, and every year they planted trees to replace the ones they had used in paper production during the year. They bought tons of saplings and always had plenty left, that they allowed some of the farmers to have.
My in-laws got a truck load of them and saved them for me. I had never occurred to me, nor did I want to take a vacation from work to go to the farm to plant trees, but after weeks and weeks of insistence through my wife, I yielded and hired a couple of fellows and off I went to the farm.
When I got there, the saplings had already been sitting out without water for weeks, and didnt look very healthy at all, but I figured that my in-laws were farmers and they knew a whole lot more about planting trees than I did.
My helpers and I must have planted hundreds of straight rows of saplings, but the years passed and I havent seen a straight row of trees yet. Im sure a few of them grew. At least I hope they did, but I couldnt walk through the farms to tell you which ones I planted, or which ones were there, or which ones grew wild.
It Is Not All About Numbers
More recently, when I started creating affiliate websites, I joined a service that provided content for my websites. All I had to do was do the market research, buy the domains, program the service, and the websites would be automatically created and content would be added to the sites periodically.
Just like the saplings, some of the websites grew, while most of the others didnt. Thats when I realized that the saying, Its just a numbers game, is not completely true.
A Bad Tree Cannot Bring Forth Good Fruit
There was no way in the world that I could get dead saplings to grow, even if I had water them forever. There is also no way to make a badly built website to be a traffic magnet.
Pay attention to what you are planting. Dig and dung around it to make sure that you have the best chance to create healthy trees, or healthy websites that will be popular and attract buyers to your affiliate products, like birds are attracted to healthy and fruitful branches.
Prepare The Land Then Plant Your Trees
The first step in affiliate marketing, as the first step in planting, is to make sure that what you are planting is good, whether it is seed, or a sapling, or a website.
Next, you have to prepare the soil conditions plowing, or digging, or preparing the support system for your website.
Traffic sources and backlinks are the equivalent to plowing the land and watering your seed.
Plant only what you know you can keep alive and growing. Numbers are extremely important, but the quality of your saplings is absolutely much more important.
I sold the land a couple of decades ago. On the few occasions when I have driven by that strip of countryside, Ive realized that no one is going to be logging that land anytime soon. Perhaps its better that way. I learned an invaluable lesson and all the farmers around got a good laugh at my expense.
