Advertising in Facebook

Advertising in Facebook

I was listening to Russell Brunson give a talk where he was describing the affiliate marketing process and various internet marketing models. After describing the process, he said, “Everything starts with an …” The audience was supposed to fill in the blank, but nobody did. He was puzzled and repeated the sentence, “Everything starts with an …” Once again there was no reply, so he filled in the blank himself, “Everything starts with an ad!”

We get into internet marketing and start thinking about all the millions people tell us we can make online, and we start pre-spending those millions buying every course in marketing we can, but we never seem to consider investing at least a bit of that money in advertising.

I have a cocky friend that nets $300,000 per year online, but to clear that amount he spends $500,000 in advertising. He doesn’t really care that the advertiser makes more than he makes, since all he has to do is schedule the ads and pay for them periodically. He has already optimized his campaigns and with affiliate income in the $300,000 range he can have almost the entire year to himself. He travels when he wants and where he wants. He has started other businesses, but none has proved as profitable as the few simple ads he keeps running for one business all year ‘round.

You may have seen a promotion by a famous young marketer, who flies to see various people and trains them at their home. Before he leaves, or in a few hours, his students start making money online. That shows what is possible through advertising.

Advantages of Facebook Advertising

When I started paying for advertising, I had naïve expectations. I thought I could spend a few dollars and make a $30 commission. I was wrong. I often spent more than the commission I would get. But whenever you hit a campaign that gives you positive results, all you have to do is scale it up and look for the next one.

Google may be the top search engine, but Facebook is the largest gathering place online. It is a social network, a place where you are not seeking information and much as you are building relationships.

Google took advantage of its top ranking to pretty much choose the advertisers they wanted and they wanted big businesses, just like any national newspaper or television station would. There was room for small businesses, but competing with large businesses can be a losing battle. Ad campaigns can be very expensive and hard to sustain. Ads need testing and tracking in order to optimize them, but small businesses and entrepreneurs may not be able to keep a campaign long enough to gather the information they need to optimize the ads.

Facebook, on the other hand, is design for individuals. Advertising is still very affordable. Large companies have started using Facebook because they have seen the incredible growth that the social network has had, but Facebook is far more oriented towards socializing than towards marketing big businesses.

Reaching Your Target Market

There are many ways to reach your target market through your ads. You can use keywords or keyword phrases, as in the case of Google Adwords. You can use contextual ads, as with Google Content Network. You can use a machine gun approach broadcasting ads to the general public in the hopes of reaching a few, as in the case of broadcast television. And you can target demographics, base of what you know about your audience, as credit card companies do with college students.

Facebook also allows you to target your audience, but you need to put some thought into your ads, so that you don’t end up broadcasting rather than targeting. The more targeted your ad is, the more successful your campaign will be.

Facebook is a true contender to other online advertisers. Don’t underestimate the power of Facebook advertising, after all, as Russell Brunson puts it, “Everything starts with an ad!”
